Hi all, Bill from Chicago. I grew up in a South Side family, but became a Cubs fan because I played second base in little league and the 1989 season happened to occur right when I became conscious that baseball was a thing. I’m still the only Cubs fan in my entire extended family of White Sox fans (2005 was a rough year).
In high school and college, basketball was my fantasy sport because I worked at summer camps in Wisconsin with no internet, and got tired of coming home in August to find all my pitchers injured and my team in last place. I ran two keeper leagues for a decade (one of which is still going without me) and then took a long break before returning to baseball in 2018, which is now my main focus. I run the Boston Red Sox in MLB and the Minnesota Timberwolves in our NBA league, but I bowed out of football because I couldn’t give it enough attention (it conflicts with both my busy season at work and all my title runs in the MLB league…)
Outside of fantasy, I taught English, Spanish, and history for 13 years before shifting to education policy work with a nonprofit org. In 2015, my class in Kankakee was featured on This American Life and Letterman. I do a lot of hiking and camping, and have hiked both the entire Appalachian Trail and the John Muir Trail in the high sierras. I’m married and have a two year old daughter, Annie, with another on the way December 2020.
